About Toyota TownAce

The Toyota TownAce is a compact cab-over van and light truck line introduced in Japan in 1976. It was positioned between Toyota’s smaller LiteAce and larger HiAce, offering useful carrying capacity in dimensions suited to narrow streets and urban work. Early models included commercial vans and eight-seat passenger wagons, followed by open-deck trucks.

Successive generations brought larger cabins, improved road manners and more passenger-car-like equipment. Major variations have included standard- and high-roof vans, multi-row wagons, trucks and camper-oriented models. Depending on the year and market, the TownAce has been available with petrol or diesel engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and two- or four-wheel drive.

The 1996 redesign introduced the TownAce Noah passenger model, using a semi-cab-over layout with greater emphasis on comfort, flexible seating and safety. The passenger branch later continued under the Noah name, while the TownAce became primarily a compact commercial vehicle. A new-generation van and truck range arrived in 2008, with production handled by Daihatsu in Indonesia for Toyota.

The TownAce is known for efficient packaging, practical cargo access, sliding side doors on vans and easy manoeuvrability. It occupies a useful position for operators needing more capacity than a very small commercial vehicle without moving to a full-size van.
