About Toyota Stout
The Toyota Stout is a bonneted light truck and pickup developed for commercial work. The name was introduced in 1959 when the Toyopet RK truck became the Toyopet Stout, although its engineering lineage extended back to earlier RK-series trucks. “Stout” reflected the model’s emphasis on strength and durability.
Toyota produced three principal generations. The short-lived first generation was replaced in 1960 by a more modern design with a flat bonnet and improved cabin space. Versions included single-cab and double-cab pickups, along with light-van and utility configurations in some markets. Engine and payload options varied, with later models serving 1.75-ton and 2-ton classes. The related Light Stout addressed demand for a smaller one-ton truck before being succeeded by the Hilux.
The third generation arrived in 1979 using a cab derived from the contemporary Hilux 4x4. By then, cab-over trucks dominated this capacity class in Japan, so the Stout was aimed mainly at export markets. It occupied a heavier-duty position than Toyota’s compact pickups, combining conventional construction, simple inline-four engines and practical load capacity. Japanese production ended in 1989, while assembly in Peru continued until 1998.
