About Toyota Starlet
The Toyota Starlet is a small passenger car best known as one of Toyota’s practical and economical entry-level models. It debuted in Japan in 1973 as the Publica Starlet, initially with a compact coupé-style body. From 1978, it developed into the familiar two-box hatchback format, typically offered with three or five doors.
Five main generations were produced through 1999. Early Starlets used rear-wheel drive, while the third generation introduced in 1984 switched to front-wheel drive, improving cabin space and reinforcing the model’s role as an urban runabout. Depending on generation and market, the range included basic commuter versions, better-equipped family models, commercial vans and sporty variants.
Performance editions are a notable part of the Starlet’s identity. Turbocharged models such as the Turbo S, GT Turbo and later Glanza V gave the lightweight hatchback a stronger enthusiast following, while mainstream versions remained focused on low running costs, compact dimensions and ease of use.
For much of its original production life, the Starlet sat near the bottom of Toyota’s passenger-car range. It was replaced by the Vitz, known internationally as the Yaris, in 1999. The Starlet name was later revived in selected African markets for a Suzuki-built compact hatchback supplied through the Toyota–Suzuki partnership. Across its different forms, the model is associated with simple engineering, efficient packaging and accessible everyday transport.
