About Toyota Sprinter

The Toyota Sprinter was a compact passenger-car family introduced in Japan in 1968 as the Corolla Sprinter. Initially a sportier derivative of the Corolla, it became a separate series in 1971 while continuing to share much of the Corolla’s engineering. Within Toyota’s range, it offered familiar compact-car practicality with more distinctive, youthful styling.

Eight generations followed, with the final redesign arriving in 1995. The range centred on four-door sedans but also included coupes, hardtops, liftbacks, five-door models, wagons and commercial vans at different stages. Power came mainly from economical four-cylinder petrol engines, although diesel and four-wheel-drive versions were also offered.

Important variations included the Sprinter Trueno sports coupe, the Cielo five-door model and the Marino four-door hardtop. The Trueno is the best-known derivative, particularly the rear-wheel-drive AE86 generation produced in the 1980s. The Sprinter Carib added station-wagon utility and available four-wheel drive, giving the nameplate a more versatile role.

The Sprinter was positioned as a stylish alternative to the mainstream Corolla rather than a completely separate mechanical design. It is known for manageable dimensions, efficient running costs, straightforward engineering and Toyota’s emphasis on durability. The core Sprinter line ended in 2000 as Toyota reorganised its compact-car range.
