About Toyota Solara

The Toyota Solara, formally introduced as the Camry Solara, was a mid-size two-door model developed primarily for North America. It arrived for the 1999 model year as the successor to the Camry coupe and remained in Toyota’s range through 2008. Based on Camry engineering, it offered more distinctive styling while retaining the space, comfort and front-wheel-drive layout associated with Toyota’s popular family car.

Two generations were produced. The first covered the 1999–2003 model years, while a fully redesigned second generation followed for 2004–2008. The original coupe gained a convertible version for 2000, and both body styles continued in the later generation. Production took place in North America, moving from Canada for the first generation to Kentucky for the second.

Depending on year and specification, the Solara was available with four-cylinder or V6 power, manual or automatic transmission, and trim levels including SE, SE Sport and SLE. The convertible was generally positioned as the more leisure-oriented version, while the coupe provided a practical alternative to a conventional sedan. Rather than serving as a dedicated sports car, the Solara occupied a grand-touring role within Toyota’s line-up, emphasising a smooth ride, usable seating and everyday refinement. It was discontinued without a direct replacement as demand for mid-size two-door cars declined.
