About Toyota Soarer
The Toyota Soarer was a premium grand touring car produced for the Japanese market from 1981 to 2005. Positioned near the top of Toyota’s passenger-car range, it combined two-door styling and rear-wheel drive with the comfort, equipment and refinement expected of a luxury model. It was designed more as a fast, comfortable long-distance car than as a focused sports car.
Four generations were built. The first two used angular coupé bodies and were offered with several inline-six engines, including turbocharged versions. The third-generation Soarer adopted smoother styling and a broader powertrain range, with naturally aspirated and turbocharged six-cylinder engines as well as a V8. Closely related versions of the third and fourth generations were marketed internationally as the Lexus SC.
The final Soarer changed from a fixed-roof coupé to a 2+2 convertible with a power-retractable metal roof. It was offered with a 4.3-litre V8 and automatic transmission, placing greater emphasis on open-top luxury and relaxed performance. When Lexus launched in Japan in 2005, this model continued there as the Lexus SC 430 and the Soarer name was discontinued.
Across its generations, the Soarer was known for advanced electronics, sophisticated suspension technology, strong engines and well-equipped interiors. It remains notable as one of Toyota’s most distinctive luxury-oriented performance cars.
