About Toyota Sera

The Toyota Sera is a compact 2+2 coupé developed for the Japanese domestic market and produced from February 1990 to December 1995. It evolved from the AXV-II concept displayed at the 1987 Tokyo Motor Show, bringing an unusually futuristic design into limited production. Toyota built 15,941 examples, making the Sera a low-volume specialty model rather than part of its mainstream passenger-car range.

Its defining features are the butterfly-style doors, which open upward and forward, and the extensive curved glass forming much of the roof and upper doors. This canopy-like cabin gives the car its distinctive appearance and creates an open, airy feel. Despite the dramatic body, the Sera used practical Toyota engineering, including a Starlet-derived platform, front-wheel drive and a 1.5-litre DOHC four-cylinder petrol engine. Five-speed manual and four-speed automatic transmissions were offered.

The Sera remained a single EXY10 generation throughout production. Three production phases introduced minor equipment, trim and detail changes rather than major redesigns. Variations mainly concerned transmission choice and optional features such as anti-lock brakes and the elaborate Super Live Sound audio system. Positioned as a style-led compact coupé rather than a dedicated high-performance sports car, the Sera is best known for combining dependable small-car mechanicals with one of Toyota’s most unconventional production designs.
