About Toyota SAI
The Toyota SAI is a four-door, five-seat hybrid sedan developed primarily for the Japanese market. Sold from December 2009 to November 2017, it combined a conventional saloon shape with Toyota’s established petrol-electric technology. Its name refers to Japanese characters associated with “talent” and “colour”, reflecting the original focus on advanced engineering and refined design.
The SAI occupied the upper-medium part of Toyota’s domestic range. It offered a more formal and premium alternative to the Prius while remaining smaller and more accessible than the Crown. All models used front-wheel drive and a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine paired with an electric motor, a nickel-metal hydride battery and Toyota’s THS II continuously variable hybrid system.
Only one generation, identified by the AZK10 model code, was produced. Early versions included the core S and higher-specification G grades, with equipment packages, Touring Selection variants and several special editions expanding the range. A substantial 2013 update introduced a sharper front design with wide headlamps, a revised interior, improved body rigidity, updated suspension tuning and a Sport driving mode. Later versions continued with S, S C Package, G and G A Package grades.
The SAI is known for smooth, quiet operation, comfortable road manners, practical exterior dimensions and extensive use of plant-based and recycled interior materials.
