About Toyota Raum

The Toyota Raum is a compact five-seat MPV developed mainly for the Japanese market. Produced from 1997 to 2011, it combined the manageable dimensions of a small car with a tall, practical cabin. Its name comes from the German word for “room” or “space”, reflecting its emphasis on interior efficiency.

Two generations were offered. The first, launched in May 1997, used a platform related to the Toyota Tercel and Corsa. It was notable for having sliding rear doors on both sides, a flat floor, flexible two-row seating and a side-hinged tailgate. A front bench-seat version was added later.

The second generation arrived in May 2003 with a stronger focus on universal design and ease of access. Its defining feature was the wide-opening passenger side, created by integrating the centre pillar into the doors. A folding front passenger seat and configurable rear seats further improved access and load-carrying flexibility.

Both generations used 1.5-litre petrol engines with automatic transmissions. Front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive versions were available, along with several equipment grades and Welcab mobility-adapted variants.

Within Toyota’s lineup, the Raum sat between conventional compact hatchbacks and larger minivans. It is best known for its space-efficient packaging, sliding doors, straightforward controls and suitability for urban families, older passengers and users who valued convenient entry and exit.
