About Toyota Progres
The Toyota Progres is a compact luxury four-door sedan created mainly for the Japanese market. Launched in May 1998, it remained in production until June 2007. Toyota produced one generation, with revisions during its life, notably in 2001, rather than a complete redesign.
Its defining concept was a “small luxury car”: dimensions more manageable than those of the Toyota Crown, combined with a long wheelbase, a spacious cabin and equipment associated with larger executive saloons. Within Toyota’s range, the Progres sat between mainstream mid-size cars and traditional full-size luxury models. It suited buyers seeking comfort and quality without a large body or conspicuous styling.
The main versions were the NC250 and NC300, powered by 2.5-litre and 3.0-litre naturally aspirated inline-six petrol engines. Rear-wheel drive was standard for these versions, while the 2.5-litre NC250 Four offered all-wheel drive. Revised models adopted Toyota D-4 direct-injection engines. Variations included Walnut Package models with real wood trim and iR versions with a sportier specification.
The Progres is known for quiet operation, a smooth ride, compact proportions and a carefully finished interior. Available leather upholstery, wood trim and advanced equipment reinforced its premium character. It shared engineering with other upmarket Toyota saloons while retaining a distinct, understated identity.
