About Toyota Previa
Toyota Previa is a large multi-purpose vehicle introduced in 1990. Known as the Estima in Japan and the Tarago in Australia, it was developed as a passenger-focused alternative to Toyota’s more utilitarian vans. Depending on market and configuration, it offered seating for seven or eight people across three rows. The model remained in production through three generations until 2019, although availability varied considerably by region.
The first generation became distinctive for its rounded, one-box shape and unusual mid-engine layout. Its four-cylinder engine was mounted beneath the floor, helping provide a low centre of gravity and a spacious cabin. Rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive versions were offered, while selected markets also received a supercharged engine. North America sold only this generation.
The second generation arrived in 2000 with a more conventional front-engine, front-wheel-drive platform, improved accessibility and flexible seating. A hybrid Estima followed in Japan in 2001. The third generation appeared in 2006, retaining the streamlined profile while adding more refined interiors, petrol powertrains and, depending on the market, V6, four-wheel-drive and hybrid variants.
Within Toyota’s line-up, the Previa occupied a relatively stylish and comfort-oriented position among large family vehicles. It is chiefly remembered for generous passenger space, sliding side doors, versatile seating and engineering that differed from most contemporary minivans.
