About Toyota Passo

The Toyota Passo was a five-door subcompact hatchback designed mainly for Japan. Introduced in 2004 and discontinued in September 2023, it occupied an entry-level position in Toyota’s passenger-car range. Its small dimensions, tight turning circle and practical cabin made it particularly suited to urban driving.

The Passo was closely related to the Daihatsu Boon and developed with Daihatsu, which also handled production. Three generations were launched: the original model in 2004, a second generation in 2010 and a fully redesigned third generation in 2016. Earlier cars offered 1.0- and 1.3-litre petrol engines, while the final generation used a 1.0-litre engine with a continuously variable transmission. Depending on the year and grade, buyers could choose front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Standard versions focused on simplicity, affordability and everyday usability. The second generation also offered the more distinctive Passo + Hana, while the third introduced the Moda grade with more refined exterior details and available two-tone colours. Later models added driver-assistance features to selected grades. The Passo was known less for performance than for economical operation, easy manoeuvrability, good interior space for its footprint and straightforward controls.
