About Toyota Mirai

The Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen fuel-cell electric saloon introduced in Japan in December 2014, followed by selected markets in North America and Europe. Its name means “future” in Japanese. Developed after years of Toyota fuel-cell research, it became one of the first series-produced fuel-cell passenger cars and serves as a technology flagship rather than a high-volume model.

The Mirai stores compressed hydrogen and uses a fuel-cell stack to generate electricity for its motor. It is known for smooth, quiet performance, relatively quick refuelling and water as its only tailpipe emission. Production has been centred in Aichi, Japan.

Two generations have been produced. The first was a distinctively styled four-seat saloon. The fully redesigned second generation launched in 2020, becoming a larger five-seat model built on a premium rear-wheel-drive platform. It brought more conventional, coupe-inspired styling, improved driving range and a stronger focus on comfort and handling. Equipment grades and specifications vary by country and model year, with versions including XLE and Limited in the United States.

Within Toyota’s electrified range, the Mirai complements hybrid, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric vehicles by demonstrating hydrogen technology. Its availability remains limited mainly to regions with suitable hydrogen refuelling infrastructure.
