About Toyota Mega Cruiser
The Toyota Mega Cruiser is a large, purpose-built 4WD derived from Toyota’s High Mobility Vehicle for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force. The civilian model entered the Japanese market in January 1996, primarily for rescue, emergency, research and exploration work in harsh environments rather than conventional family use. Production ended in 2001, with only one generation offered.
The civilian BXD20 had a hard-top, six-seat body, while the related BXD10 military platform supported troop transport and other specialist configurations. Its core powertrain combined a 4.1-litre turbocharged and intercooled four-cylinder diesel engine, a four-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive with a two-speed transfer case. Within Toyota’s range, it was a more specialised and substantially larger off-road vehicle than the widely marketed Land Cruiser.
Notable features included four-wheel steering, hub-reduction gearing, 420 mm of ground clearance, independent suspension, inboard disc brakes and locking differentials. An optional tyre-pressure control system aided progress through mud and snow. Its exceptional width, large load area and utility-focused engineering made it suitable for demanding professional roles. Limited civilian production and Japan-only official sales have also made the Mega Cruiser a rare Toyota model.
