About Toyota Matrix

The Toyota Matrix is a compact five-door hatchback with the upright profile and flexible cabin of a small wagon or crossover. Introduced for the 2003 model year, it offered a more practical alternative to a conventional compact sedan while retaining manageable dimensions and car-like driving characteristics. Production took place in Cambridge, Ontario, Canada.

Two generations were produced. The first ran from the 2003 model year and established the Matrix as a versatile member of Toyota’s compact range. A redesigned second generation arrived for 2009 with a lower, wider appearance, updated four-cylinder engines and revised suspension and steering. The model remained available through 2014 in Canada, while US sales ended earlier.

Depending on year and market, the range included standard, XR or S, XRS and all-wheel-drive versions. Most models prioritised everyday economy and utility, while XRS variants added stronger performance and sportier chassis or styling features. Front-wheel drive was standard, with all-wheel drive offered on selected versions. The Matrix is best known for combining compact-car efficiency with five-passenger seating, folding rear seats and useful cargo capacity, placing it between Toyota’s traditional small cars and larger utility vehicles.
