About Toyota Lexcen
The Toyota Lexcen was a large, rear-wheel-drive family car sold in Australia from 1989 to 1997. It was created through the United Australian Automobile Industries model-sharing agreement between Toyota and Holden. Built by Holden alongside the Commodore, the Lexcen used the same basic body, platform and mechanical package, with Toyota-specific badges, grille treatments and trim details. Its name honoured Australian yacht designer Ben Lexcen.
Sedan and station wagon body styles were offered, powered by a 3.8-litre V6 paired with a four-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the related Commodore, the Lexcen range did not include manual gearboxes, V8 engines or dedicated sports models. Early versions used Lexcen, GL and GLX grades, while later ranges included CSi, VXi and the higher-specification Newport sedan.
Five Lexcen series were marketed as T1 to T5, corresponding to the Holden Commodore’s VN, VP, VR and VS generations, including the VS Series II update. Changes between series followed the donor model’s styling, equipment and mechanical revisions.
Within Toyota’s Australian line-up, the Lexcen provided a larger and more traditionally Australian alternative to the Camry. It is chiefly known for its spacious cabin, strong V6 performance, relaxed cruising ability and practical wagon option, as well as its unusual position as a Holden-designed and built vehicle sold through Toyota dealerships.
