About Toyota JPN Taxi
The Toyota JPN Taxi is a purpose-built passenger vehicle developed for Japan’s taxi industry. Previewed by the 2013 JPN Taxi Concept, the production model was launched in October 2017. It took over the role long associated with Toyota’s Crown Comfort and Comfort saloons, but adopted a taller, more space-efficient body designed specifically for urban transport.
The model is known for its universal-design approach. A low, flat cabin floor, a wide power-operated rear sliding door on the kerb side, generous headroom and wheelchair accommodation help serve passengers with varied mobility needs. Its upright shape, large windows and traditional deep-indigo signature colour also make it readily identifiable in city traffic. Driver-focused features include good outward visibility and an instrument layout intended to accommodate taxi equipment.
All versions use front-wheel drive and a 1.5-litre LPG-electric hybrid system developed for frequent commercial operation. The range has included the standard Nagomi grade and better-equipped Takumi grade, with safety and convenience equipment updated during production.
The JPN Taxi remains in its first generation and is produced in Japan by Toyota Motor East Japan. Within Toyota’s lineup, it is a specialist commercial-passenger model rather than a conventional family car, positioned as the brand’s modern reference vehicle for taxi service. Its main qualities are accessibility, interior practicality, manoeuvrability and suitability for intensive urban use.
