About Toyota iQ
The Toyota iQ is an ultra-compact three-door city car introduced in 2008. Built in Japan, it occupied the smallest end of Toyota’s passenger-car range and was developed mainly for crowded urban environments. Its short body measures just under three metres, making it substantially smaller than a conventional supermini.
The iQ was produced in a single generation. Its defining feature is a space-efficient “3+1” cabin, designed to carry three adults and a child or a small amount of luggage. Toyota achieved this layout through compact mechanical components, an underfloor fuel tank, slim seats and an asymmetrical dashboard. The short length and tight turning circle support easy manoeuvring and parking, while the relatively wide body gives the front compartment a less restricted feel than its exterior dimensions suggest.
Depending on the market and model year, the range included 1.0- and 1.3-litre petrol engines, a 1.4-litre diesel in parts of Europe, and manual or continuously variable transmissions. North American versions were sold as the Scion iQ. Toyota also produced a limited electric version for fleet and car-sharing use, while Japan received rare GRMN performance variants.
Known for unconventional packaging, distinctive styling and city-focused dimensions, the iQ offered a more design-led alternative to basic small cars. Production ended in the mid-2010s without a direct successor.
