About Toyota Ipsum

The Toyota Ipsum is a family-oriented multi-purpose vehicle introduced in Japan in May 1996. It combined the road manners and hinged rear doors of a passenger car with the raised roof, three-row seating and flexible cabin of a compact minivan. In export markets, related versions were sold as the Toyota Picnic and, later, the Avensis Verso.

Toyota produced two generations. The first-generation Ipsum used a relatively compact body and normally seated seven people. Depending on market and specification, it was offered with 2.0-litre petrol or 2.2-litre turbo-diesel power, while Japanese versions included front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive layouts. Equipment grades ranged from basic E Selection models to higher L Selection versions, alongside sportier Aero Touring variants and special editions.

The second generation arrived in 2001 with a wider, longer body, more passenger space and a larger 2.4-litre petrol engine in Japan. Front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive remained available, and the cabin continued to prioritise seven-seat practicality, adaptable seating and useful luggage storage.

Within Toyota’s range, the Ipsum occupied the middle ground between a conventional estate car and a full-size minivan. It is chiefly known for practical packaging, easy everyday driving and a versatile interior suited to family transport. Japanese production ended in December 2009.
