About Toyota Highlander
The Toyota Highlander is a mid-size crossover SUV developed primarily for family use. It debuted in Japan in 2000 as the Kluger and reached the United States in 2001 under the Highlander name. Unlike traditional truck-based SUVs of the period, it used unibody construction and independent suspension to provide more car-like handling, ride comfort and cabin refinement.
Four generations have been introduced. Over time, the Highlander grew into a three-row model with seating for seven or eight, depending on configuration. Petrol engines have been offered throughout its production, while the Highlander Hybrid joined the range for the 2006 model year and became one of its defining variations. Trim levels have included practical mainstream versions, the sportier XSE and more highly equipped Limited and Platinum models. Front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive have been available, although specifications vary by year and market.
The fourth generation arrived for the 2020 model year on Toyota’s TNGA-K platform. North American petrol and hybrid models are assembled in Princeton, Indiana. Toyota has also announced a battery-electric Highlander for North America, with production planned in Kentucky. Within Toyota’s SUV range, the Highlander occupies the family-oriented three-row mid-size position, combining everyday usability, flexible interior space and available electrified powertrains.
