About Toyota GR86
The Toyota GR86 is a compact 2+2 sports coupe and the second generation of Toyota’s 86 line. The original Toyota 86 entered production in 2012, while the GR86 name arrived with the redesigned model launched in 2021. It sits within Toyota’s Gazoo Racing range as a smaller, less powerful alternative to the GR Supra, with an emphasis on balance, driver involvement and straightforward mechanicals.
Developed jointly with Subaru and built at Subaru’s Gunma plant, the GR86 shares its basic platform and naturally aspirated flat-four engine with the Subaru BRZ. Toyota gives the model its own exterior design, chassis calibration and brand identity. The second generation uses a 2.4-litre boxer engine, rear-wheel drive and a choice of six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, although specifications vary by market.
Grades differ between regions and commonly include standard and higher-equipment versions, alongside occasional limited editions with distinctive colours, trim or chassis hardware. Across its variations, the GR86 is known for a low centre of gravity, compact dimensions, responsive handling and strong aftermarket and motorsport interest.
