About Toyota Gaia
The Toyota Gaia was a compact MPV offered in Japan from May 1998 to 2004. Developed alongside the Ipsum, it served as a more upmarket family vehicle within Toyota’s minivan range. Its five-door body met Japan’s compact “5-number” size category while providing three rows of seating for six or seven occupants.
The Gaia remained in a single generation, receiving a major update in April 2001 rather than a complete redesign. Early versions used a 2.0-litre petrol engine or a 2.2-litre turbo-diesel. The updated range introduced a newer 2.0-litre direct-injection petrol unit, while another 2.0-litre petrol engine continued in selected models. A four-speed automatic transmission was standard, with front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive depending on the version.
Variations were based mainly on seating arrangement, drivetrain and equipment. L and G packages added comfort and appearance features, while Aero models had sportier exterior trim. Limited and navigation-equipped special editions were also offered.
The Gaia is known for its practical cabin, flexible seating, manageable dimensions and relatively refined presentation. It occupied the middle ground between car-like compact people carriers and Toyota’s larger minivans, with everyday comfort and family usability taking priority over performance.
