About Toyota Cresta
The Toyota Cresta was a Japanese-market mid-size luxury car produced from 1980 to 2001. Introduced as a principal model for the Toyota Vista dealer network, it occupied the brand’s upper-middle-class range. The first generation had a four-door hardtop-style body, while subsequent models used a conventional four-door sedan format.
Five generations were offered: X50/X60, X70, X80, X90 and X100. The Cresta was closely related to the Toyota Mark II and Chaser, sharing much of their basic engineering while differing in styling, trim and market positioning. It generally emphasised formal design, cabin comfort and refinement, although sportier versions were also available.
Depending on the generation, the range included four- and six-cylinder petrol engines, diesel units, and naturally aspirated, supercharged or turbocharged configurations. Rear-wheel drive was standard for most versions, with four-wheel drive offered on later models. Notable grades included Super Lucent, Exceed and the performance-oriented Roulant series. The Cresta is known for smooth inline-six engines, balanced rear-drive handling, practical accommodation and understated Japanese luxury. Production ended in 2001, with the Cresta and Chaser succeeded by the Verossa.
