About Toyota Corona
The Toyota Corona was a long-running family car produced from 1957 to 2001 across 11 generations. Introduced as the Toyopet Corona, it sat below the larger Crown and became an important part of Toyota’s passenger-car range. Early models were compact, while later versions grew into the mid-size class.
The Corona was designed mainly for practical family and business use. Depending on the generation and market, it was offered as a sedan, hardtop or coupe, liftback, station wagon, van and, in its early years, a pickup. Petrol engines were most common, with diesel options available in some periods. Early Coronas used rear-wheel drive, while front-wheel-drive versions arrived in the 1980s and later became standard.
Sold widely outside Japan, the Corona helped Toyota expand in markets including North America, Europe, Asia and Oceania. Its exact position varied by region, but it generally ranked above the Corolla as a roomier car without reaching the Crown’s premium role. Notable variations included GT models, the four-door Corona Exiv hardtop and the final Corona Premio.
The model is chiefly known for durability, straightforward engineering, passenger comfort and everyday usability rather than luxury or high performance. These qualities suited private, fleet and taxi use. Production ended with the Corona Premio in 2001, after which the Premio continued its role in Japan.
