About Toyota Chaser

The Toyota Chaser was a Japanese-market mid-size passenger car produced from 1977 until June 2001 across six generations. Introduced as a sister model to the Mark II, it was positioned as a younger, more individual alternative while retaining an upmarket character. Early models included four-door sedans and two-door hardtops; later generations focused on a four-door hardtop-style body.

The model evolved through the X30/X40, X60, X70, X80, X90 and X100 series. It shared much of its engineering with the Mark II and Cresta but used distinct exterior styling and trim. Most versions had a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout, although four-wheel drive became available on selected later models.

The range included practical, luxury-oriented and performance versions. From the fifth generation, the main lines were the refined Avante and the sportier Tourer. Engines varied by period and included four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, but the Chaser became particularly associated with Toyota’s inline-six engines. The turbocharged 2.5-litre Tourer V was the leading performance model.

Within Toyota’s domestic lineup, the Chaser combined executive-car comfort with a sharper image than its close relatives. The final X100 generation is especially recognised for its restrained four-door design, strong six-cylinder options and popularity among performance-car enthusiasts.
