About Toyota Celsior
The Toyota Celsior is a full-size luxury sedan developed as Toyota’s flagship model for private owner-drivers in Japan. Introduced in October 1989, it was the Japanese-market counterpart of the Lexus LS, which helped establish Toyota’s Lexus luxury brand overseas. The Celsior was assembled at Toyota’s Tahara plant and remained in production until 2006, when the Lexus LS took over its role in Japan.
Three generations were released, arriving in 1989, 1994 and 2000. The first two generations were closely related to the Lexus LS 400 and used a 4.0-litre V8 engine. The third generation corresponded to the LS 430 and adopted a 4.3-litre V8, along with a redesigned platform, a larger cabin and more advanced comfort and safety equipment. All generations used a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout and automatic transmission.
The range commonly included A, B and C specifications, with equipment varying by model year. Higher versions could feature electronically controlled air suspension, upgraded rear-seat amenities and additional convenience technology, while eR variants offered firmer, more driver-focused suspension tuning.
Within Toyota’s domestic lineup, the Celsior was positioned as a prestigious owner-driven alternative to traditional luxury saloons. It is particularly known for quiet operation, smooth V8 performance, ride comfort, precise assembly and restrained styling.
