About Toyota Carina
The Toyota Carina was a compact family car produced from 1970 to 2001, primarily as a four-door sedan. It occupied a position between the Corolla and Corona, combining practical transport with a slightly sportier character. The original Carina was developed alongside the Celica and shared its chassis and many mechanical components.
Across seven sedan generations, the Carina changed from rear-wheel drive to front-wheel drive. Toyota introduced a front-wheel-drive sedan in 1984 while retaining some rear-wheel-drive variants, before adopting front-wheel drive throughout the range in 1988. Depending on the period, versions included two- and four-door sedans, hardtops, a coupe, hatchback, Surf wagon and commercial van. Petrol and diesel engines were offered, while GT grades provided a stronger performance focus.
European-market variations included the Carina II and Carina E. The Carina E was designed specifically for Europe and became the first passenger car assembled at Toyota’s UK plant in 1992. Japan also received the lower-roof Carina ED four-door hardtop.
The Carina is known for straightforward engineering, useful cabin space and a balance of comfort, economy and restrained sportiness. Later models placed greater emphasis on safety, efficiency and practical sedan ownership, keeping the Carina within the core of Toyota’s passenger-car range.
