About Toyota Caldina
The Toyota Caldina was a medium-class station wagon produced for the Japanese market from November 1992 to June 2007. Developed from Toyota’s Corona and Carina wagon lineage, it combined passenger-car comfort with a large, flexible luggage area. Early models were also offered as commercial vans, although the van remained on the first-generation platform and ended production in 2002.
Three generations were built: the T190 from 1992, the T210 from 1997 and the T240 from 2002. The range included front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations, with petrol engines throughout and diesel options in earlier generations. Mainstream versions focused on practical family and touring use, while GT grades introduced a stronger sporting character.
The second-generation GT-T became a notable performance variant, pairing a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine with four-wheel drive. Its third-generation equivalent was the GT-Four, rated at 260 PS and positioned above the X, Z and ZT versions. The final Caldina adopted more distinctive wedge-shaped styling and was marketed around Toyota’s “Touring Machine” concept.
Within Toyota’s domestic lineup, the Caldina occupied the space between conventional family estates and specialised performance wagons. It is best known for useful cargo capacity, available all-weather traction and unusually powerful flagship models in an otherwise practical five-door format.
