About Toyota Avensis

The Toyota Avensis was a mid-size family car developed mainly for Europe. Introduced in 1997 as the replacement for the Carina E, it occupied the D-segment above the Corolla and served for a time as Toyota’s European flagship passenger model. Production took place at Toyota’s Burnaston plant in Derbyshire, United Kingdom, with the final Avensis built in July 2018.

Three generations were produced. The first, offered from 1997 to 2003, was available as a saloon, five-door liftback and estate. The second generation arrived in 2003 with saloon, hatchback and Tourer estate bodies. The third generation, launched for 2009, focused on saloon and Tourer versions and received substantial updates during its production life. Depending on year and market, buyers could choose from several petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, and trim levels aimed at private or business users.

The Avensis was positioned as a practical alternative to mainstream European mid-size cars, with an emphasis on passenger comfort, useful cabin and luggage space, safety equipment and consistent build quality rather than sporting character. Estate versions added greater carrying capacity, while higher specifications provided more comfort and technology. Its restrained design, broad range and suitability for long-distance driving also made it a common fleet and company-car choice.
