About Toyota Aqua
The Toyota Aqua is a five-door subcompact hybrid hatchback introduced in Japan in December 2011. It was created as a smaller, more affordable companion to the Prius, giving Toyota a dedicated hybrid model for urban and everyday use. The first-generation car was also sold in several overseas markets as the Toyota Prius c, while the Aqua name remained most closely associated with Japan.
Two generations have been produced. The original model ran from 2011 to 2021 and established the Aqua around compact dimensions, low fuel consumption and practical hatchback packaging. Its range included regular trim levels as well as X-Urban, Crossover and GR Sport variations during its long production life.
The second generation arrived in July 2021 with a redesigned body, a 1.5-litre petrol-electric hybrid system and a newer platform. It introduced a high-output bipolar nickel-metal hydride drive battery on major versions and, for the first time in an Aqua, optional E-Four electric all-wheel drive. A GR Sport version followed in 2022, combining unique styling with chassis and suspension changes.
Within Toyota’s lineup, the Aqua sits as a compact, hybrid-only hatchback below the larger Prius. It is known chiefly for efficient city driving, easy manoeuvrability, quiet low-speed operation and useful interior space for its size. Production has been centred at Toyota Motor East Japan’s Iwate plant.
