About Toyota Altezza
Toyota Altezza was a compact rear-wheel-drive sports sedan introduced in Japan in October 1998. It occupied a driver-focused position in Toyota’s range, combining four-door practicality with balanced packaging and responsive handling. The model also formed the basis of the first-generation Lexus IS sold outside Japan.
The Altezza was produced in a single XE10 generation until 2005. Its main sedan versions were the AS200 and RS200. The AS200 used a smooth 2.0-litre inline-six engine, while the RS200 featured a higher-output 2.0-litre four-cylinder. Manual and automatic transmissions were offered, depending on version and year.
Toyota added the Altezza Gita five-door wagon in 2001, providing greater cargo flexibility. Gita models came with 2.0-litre or 3.0-litre inline-six engines, and selected versions offered four-wheel drive. This variation broadened the range while retaining its compact, sporty character.
The Altezza is known for its compact dimensions, distinctive styling and well-controlled chassis. It won the 1998–1999 Car of the Year Japan award and remains associated with Toyota’s late-1990s performance-car era. In 2005, its place in Japan was taken by the Lexus IS as Lexus established its domestic-market range.
