About Tesla Semi
The Tesla Semi is a battery-electric Class 8 tractor designed for commercial freight operations. It was first shown as a prototype in 2017 and reached initial customer deliveries in December 2022. Unlike Tesla’s passenger vehicles, the Semi targets fleet buyers and freight carriers rather than private customers.
Production has been centred in Nevada, where early units were built in limited numbers while Tesla continued development and real-world testing. Tesla has since positioned the Semi for broader customer deliveries and volume production from 2026, making it a distinct commercial product within a lineup otherwise led by cars, SUVs and the Cybertruck.
The model is offered in Standard Range and Long Range forms. Current Tesla specifications list an estimated range of about 325 miles for the Standard Range version and about 500 miles for the Long Range version, both based on an 82,000 lb gross combination weight. The Semi uses three independent motors on the rear axles and supports high-power charging through the MCS standard.
The Semi is known for its central driving position, low-mounted battery layout, electric powertrain, regenerative braking and connected software features. Its role in Tesla’s range is to extend the brand’s electric-vehicle technology into heavy-duty transport, where operating cost, charging speed, payload efficiency and uptime are central concerns for fleet operators.
