About Tesla Roadster

The Tesla Roadster was Tesla’s first production vehicle and the car that introduced the brand as a maker of high-performance battery-electric vehicles. Series production began in March 2008, and Tesla ended the original production run in January 2012. It was a compact two-seat electric sports car with rear-wheel drive, a removable roof panel and an EPA combined-cycle range of 245 miles.

In Tesla’s early lineup, the Roadster sat alone as a low-volume flagship rather than a mainstream product. It arrived before the Model S and helped establish the company’s focus on long electric range, quick acceleration and advanced electric powertrain development.

The first-generation car evolved through updates such as Roadster 2.0 and Roadster 2.5, with Sport versions positioned as higher-performance variants. The 2.5 update brought revised exterior details, improved seats, interior changes, additional sound insulation and an available touchscreen display with a reversing camera.

Its market position was unusual for its time: an expensive electric sports car aimed at enthusiasts and early adopters, not a city commuter or economy EV. The model is best known for helping prove that an electric car could be fast, desirable and usable beyond short urban trips.

Tesla unveiled a second-generation Roadster concept in 2017, but it remains separate from the original production model. Within Tesla’s wider identity, the Roadster name represents the brand’s sports-car edge: rare, compact, performance-focused and closely linked to the company’s early image.
