About Suzuki XN85

The Suzuki XN85 is a rare turbocharged sport motorcycle introduced for the 1983 model year. It was developed during the brief early-1980s trend for factory-built turbo motorcycles and was aimed mainly at export markets. The model occupied a specialist position between Suzuki’s middleweight GS machines and its larger, conventionally powered performance bikes.

Its 673 cc DOHC inline-four combined air and oil cooling, electronic fuel injection and an IHI turbocharger. The XN85 name referred to its claimed output of 85 PS. Rather than concentrating solely on peak power, Suzuki tuned the engine for stronger mid-range performance. Drive was through a five-speed transmission and chain final drive.

The XN85 was produced in one main generation and one principal production version, with only limited market-specific differences. Its distinctive equipment included Katana-influenced styling, a compact 16-inch front wheel, anti-dive front suspension and Suzuki’s Full Floater rear suspension system. Oil jets beneath the pistons also helped manage the additional heat created by turbocharging.

Although larger naturally aspirated motorcycles soon offered comparable performance at lower cost and complexity, the XN85 became known for its advanced engineering, composed handling and unusual place in Suzuki’s performance lineup. Its short production run has made it one of the brand’s more distinctive motorcycles of the period.
