About Suzuki X-90
The Suzuki X-90 is a compact two-seat SUV coupé developed from a concept shown at the 1993 Tokyo Motor Show. Production began in Japan in 1995 and ended in 1997, although vehicles were sold as 1996–1998 model-year cars in North America. It was offered in Japan and several export markets, sometimes under the Suzuki Vitara X-90 name.
Based on the first-generation Vitara, also known as the Escudo or Sidekick depending on the market, the X-90 combined body-on-frame SUV construction with the styling and layout of a small sports coupé. Its distinctive features included two doors, a separate boot, rounded bodywork and removable glass T-top roof panels. A 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine was paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission.
Depending on market and specification, the X-90 was available with rear-wheel drive or selectable four-wheel drive. It remained a single-generation model, with only minor specification changes during its short production run and no direct successor. Positioned as an unconventional alternative to Suzuki’s more practical compact 4x4s, it offered limited passenger and luggage space but stood apart through its unusual mix of open-roof motoring, compact dimensions and off-road-derived mechanical design.
