About Suzuki Sidekick

The Suzuki Sidekick was a compact SUV sold in North America from the 1989 to 1998 model years. Developed as a more modern and road-friendly companion to the smaller Samurai, it gave Suzuki a practical entry in the growing small-SUV market. The same basic vehicle was known as the Vitara or Escudo elsewhere and was closely related to the Geo and Chevrolet Tracker.

The Sidekick name covered one main generation. Early versions were short-wheelbase two-doors with either a fixed hardtop or convertible soft top. A longer four-door wagon arrived for 1991, adding useful passenger and cargo space. Depending on year and trim, the range offered two-wheel or four-wheel drive, manual or automatic transmissions, and several four-cylinder engines. The later four-door Sidekick Sport featured wider bodywork, a longer nose and a 1.8-litre engine.

North American vehicles were sourced from Japan and the CAMI joint-venture plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, where the related Tracker was also built. Within Suzuki’s lineup, the Sidekick sat above the Samurai as the more comfortable and versatile utility model. It is known for compact dimensions, straightforward construction, available low-range four-wheel drive and varied body styles. For 1999, Suzuki replaced the Sidekick name in North America with Vitara.
