About Suzuki Savage

The Suzuki Savage is a compact cruiser motorcycle introduced in 1986 as the LS650. It brought an unusual format to Suzuki’s custom-style range: a large-capacity, air-cooled single-cylinder engine rather than the V-twin layout commonly associated with cruisers. The 652 cc four-stroke engine, low seat, narrow build and belt final drive helped define its simple, approachable character.

The Savage did not pass through sharply separated generations. Suzuki retained the same basic platform for decades, applying gradual mechanical, styling and equipment updates. The main version was the LS650, sold in several international markets. Japan also received the related LS400 from 1987, using a 396 cc single-cylinder engine in a similar chassis.

In North America, the Savage name remained in use through the 2004 model year. From 2005, the motorcycle continued as the Boulevard S40, placing it within Suzuki’s wider Boulevard cruiser family. Although the badge changed, its fundamental concept remained much the same.

Within Suzuki’s lineup, the Savage occupied the accessible end of the cruiser market, below the brand’s larger multi-cylinder models. It is best known for its distinctive big-single pulse, manageable proportions, low-speed ease and straightforward construction. Its long-lived design also made it a familiar everyday cruiser and a popular basis for lightweight custom builds.
