About Suzuki Samurai
The Suzuki Samurai is a compact, body-on-frame 4x4 closely related to the second-generation Suzuki Jimny, also known as the SJ series. Introduced under the Samurai name in export markets during the 1980s, it occupied a position below larger, heavier off-road vehicles. In the United States, it arrived for the 1986 model year as Suzuki’s first passenger vehicle in that market.
Rather than covering several completely separate generations, the Samurai name mainly applied to successive versions and updates of the SJ platform. Specifications vary by country and production year. Typical features include a short wheelbase, compact dimensions, solid axles, part-time four-wheel drive and a transfer case with low-range gearing.
Major variations included closed hardtops, removable or folding soft tops and, in some regions, long-wheelbase and pickup models. Petrol engines of approximately 1.0 and 1.3 litres were widely used, while later European-market vehicles were also available with diesel power. Production took place in Japan and through regional manufacturers, notably Santana Motor in Spain.
The Samurai is known more for simplicity, low weight, manoeuvrability and off-road ability than for comfort or road refinement. It served as Suzuki’s small utility 4x4 and helped establish the brand’s reputation for compact off-road vehicles before later Jimny models assumed that role in many markets.
