About Suzuki RGV
The Suzuki RGV, generally known as the RGV250 Gamma, is a lightweight two-stroke sport motorcycle introduced in Japan in 1988 as the successor to the RG250 Gamma. It transferred ideas from Suzuki’s Grand Prix racing programme to a road-going 250 cc machine, using full bodywork, an aluminium frame, a liquid-cooled V-twin engine and a six-speed transmission. Within Suzuki’s range, it occupied a focused race-replica position rather than serving as an everyday all-rounder.
Three principal chassis generations define the model. The VJ21 established the basic format in the late 1980s. The substantially revised VJ22 brought major chassis, suspension and engine-control changes. The final VJ23 was a more extensive redesign produced mainly for the Japanese market. Standard models were joined by Sports Production versions, including SP and SP-II variations, with competition-oriented features such as close-ratio gearing and, on some versions, a dry clutch.
The RGV is known for low weight, compact dimensions, agile handling and the strong high-revving character typical of performance two-strokes. Output and equipment varied by year and market because of licensing and regulatory limits. Its narrow power delivery and specialised maintenance requirements made it less practical than a four-stroke road bike, but helped establish it as one of Suzuki’s defining small-capacity performance motorcycles of its era.
