About Suzuki RG
The Suzuki RG is a family of two-stroke road motorcycles closely associated with the company’s racing activities. It began with lightweight models such as the RG50 in 1977, followed by the RG125, RG185 and RG250E in 1978. These early machines were conventional sports roadsters, positioned as lively alternatives to Suzuki’s four-stroke GS models.
The range changed significantly with the Gamma generation. The RG50 Gamma appeared in 1982 and the influential RG250 Gamma followed in 1983, bringing racing-style bodywork, liquid cooling and a lightweight chassis to the road. Suzuki expanded the concept in 1985 with the RG125 Gamma and the larger RG400 and RG500 Gamma. Later versions included redesigned RG125 models and the Japan-market RG200 Gamma. Specifications, power limits and body styles differed between countries.
Most RG models used single-cylinder or twin-cylinder engines, while the RG400 and RG500 employed distinctive square-four layouts. The family is known for low weight, responsive handling, strong high-rev performance and styling influenced by Grand Prix racing. Within Suzuki’s historical line-up, the RG covered everything from small-capacity learner and commuter sports bikes to specialised race-replica machines, with the RG250 and RG500 Gamma representing its best-known forms.
