About Suzuki Kei
The Suzuki Kei is a Japanese kei-class hatchback produced from 1998 to 2009. Introduced when Japan adopted revised kei-car dimensions, it combined the compact footprint and 660 cc engine capacity of the category with raised ground clearance, large wheels and SUV-inspired styling. Its elevated body also supported easier access and a higher driving position than a conventional small hatchback.
The model remained within a single generation, although Suzuki updated its appearance, interior and equipment several times. It was initially offered as a three-door, with a more practical five-door added in 1999. The five-door later became the standard body style. Depending on year and specification, buyers could choose naturally aspirated or turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engines, manual or automatic transmissions, and front-wheel or four-wheel drive.
Versions ranged from basic everyday models to the sportier Kei Sport and Kei Works. The Works variant gave the car a distinct performance role within Suzuki’s kei lineup, while four-wheel-drive versions suited areas with frequent snow or poor road conditions. The Kei is chiefly known for blending low running costs and urban-friendly dimensions with useful cabin space, straightforward mechanicals and a more rugged character than most kei hatchbacks of its era.
