About Suzuki KATANA

The Suzuki KATANA is a road-focused sport motorcycle best known for its sharply angled bodywork and Japanese sword theme. The original GSX1100S was shown in Cologne in 1980 and entered production in 1981, combining an air-cooled inline-four engine with styling that was unusually radical for its era. It became one of Suzuki’s most recognisable motorcycles and remained in production in various forms until 2000.

KATANA developed into a broad model family rather than one fixed specification. Major early versions included the GSX1100S and GSX750S, while Suzuki also used the name for 650, 400, 250 and 125 cc motorcycles in selected markets. Updated and revived versions appeared during the 1990s, including a Japanese-market GSX1100S.

The model has two main eras: the original series and the modern generation launched in 2019. The newer KATANA uses a 999 cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine and an aluminium frame, combining heritage-inspired styling with contemporary brakes, suspension and rider electronics. A 2022 update added expanded electronic controls and engine refinements.

Within Suzuki’s range, the KATANA occupies a distinctive street-sport position. It is more upright and design-led than a full supersport while sharing engineering links with Suzuki’s high-performance road motorcycles. Its defining qualities are strong visual identity, muscular inline-four performance, agile handling and everyday road usability.
