About Suzuki Karimun
The Suzuki Karimun is a compact five-door city car developed mainly for the Indonesian market. Sold from 1999 to 2021, it occupied the affordable end of Suzuki’s passenger-car range and was designed for crowded urban roads, everyday commuting and practical family use. Its tall body and small footprint reflected the space-efficient approach associated with Suzuki’s Japanese kei-car models.
The nameplate passed through three main forms. The original Karimun, often called the “Karimun Kotak” because of its boxy styling, was locally assembled and based on the Wagon R Wide. It was followed in 2007 by the Karimun Estilo, an Indian-built model with a rounder shape and a more conventional hatchback appearance. The Karimun Wagon R arrived in 2013, returning to a tall, squared-off design and entering Indonesia’s low-cost green car category.
Wagon R versions included GA, GL, GX and the more distinctively styled GS, while selected models offered Suzuki’s automated manual transmission. Across its generations, the Karimun was known for simple engineering, compact dimensions, good cabin utilisation and economical small-capacity petrol engines. These qualities made it a practical entry-level car for private owners and fleet operators, positioned below Suzuki’s larger hatchbacks and multipurpose vehicles.
