About Suzuki GS
The Suzuki GS name identifies a broad family of road motorcycles rather than one single model. Introduced in 1976, the series marked Suzuki’s major move into modern four-stroke, multi-cylinder motorcycles. Early models such as the GS400 and GS750 were soon joined by the GS550 and GS1000, giving the range a presence from the middleweight class to the large-capacity performance market.
Most first-generation GS motorcycles used air-cooled, double-overhead-cam engines and conventional tubular frames. The line included standard roadsters, sport-oriented S versions, cruiser-styled L models and shaft-driven G variants aimed at touring. Engine layouts ranged from single- and twin-cylinder units to large inline-four engines. During the 1980s, four-valve developments were generally marketed as GSX models outside North America, although naming varied by market.
The GS500 later became the best-known long-running version of the name. This accessible parallel-twin middleweight was offered as the unfaired GS500E and, in some markets, the fully faired GS500F. It occupied an entry-level position below Suzuki’s larger sport and touring motorcycles.
Across its variations, the GS family is known for balanced handling, durable engines, straightforward mechanical design and broad everyday usability. Classic four-cylinder models also remain significant as the foundation for Suzuki’s later GSX and GSX-R performance ranges.
