About Suzuki Fronte
Introduced in 1962 as the Suzulight Fronte, the Fronte was Suzuki’s core passenger car in Japan’s kei class. Designed to carry four adults and luggage within strict size and engine limits, it helped establish the company’s reputation for compact, economical cars.
The Fronte developed through seven generations. Early models used front-wheel drive, while the second through fourth generations adopted rear-mounted engines and rear-wheel drive. From 1979, the range returned to a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout and shared its basic two-box design with the Alto. The Fronte served as the passenger-car alternative to the commercially classified Alto.
Major variations included two- and four-door saloons, later five-door models, the sporting Fronte SS and the low-roof Fronte Coupé. The separate Fronte 800 was a larger five-seat small car rather than a kei model. Engine choices evolved from small two-cylinder units to two-stroke and four-stroke three-cylinder engines, while later versions offered equipment such as twin-cam power and four-wheel drive.
Known for space-efficient packaging, low weight and distinctive engineering, the Fronte occupied an important place below Suzuki’s larger cars. It was absorbed into the Alto range in 1989, ending the Fronte name while continuing Suzuki’s focus on practical small cars.
