About Suzuki DR-Z
The Suzuki DR-Z is a family of four-stroke, single-cylinder motorcycles developed for dual-purpose, trail and supermoto riding. Introduced in 2000, the DR-Z400 became the best-known member of the range, combining off-road-oriented suspension and light, narrow construction with practical everyday usability.
The original 400 platform appeared in several forms. The DR-Z400S was the road-legal dual-sport version, while the DR-Z400E placed greater emphasis on off-road performance. The DR-Z400SM, introduced in 2004, adapted the design for street-focused supermoto use with 17-inch wheels, road tyres and revised suspension. Availability and specifications varied by country.
Rather than receiving frequent generations, the 400 series retained its basic design for many years and gained a reputation for simple operation, durable engineering, manageable power and strong aftermarket support. It occupied the middle ground between Suzuki’s smaller recreational trail bikes and larger adventure motorcycles.
A major evolution arrived with the DR-Z4S and DR-Z4SM, launched internationally in 2025 and sold as 2026 models in the United States. These retain a 398 cc single-cylinder format but introduce fuel injection, ride-by-wire control, rider-assistance electronics, ABS and a redesigned chassis. The DR-Z name also covers smaller off-road models, including the DR-Z50 and DR-Z125L, aimed at young, new or smaller riders.
