About Suzuki DR

Suzuki DR is a family of four-stroke trail, enduro and dual-sport motorcycles introduced around 1980. Rather than one continuous model, the DR name covers several displacement classes developed for mixed road and off-road use. Most versions use a single-cylinder engine, long-travel suspension, an upright riding position and narrow bodywork suited to unpaved terrain.

Early DR400 and DR500 models established the range, followed by smaller DR125 and DR250 variants and larger machines such as the DR600. The DR350 became a widely recognised middleweight, offered in road-legal and off-road forms. At the upper end, the DR650 replaced the DR600 in 1990, while the DR750S and DR800S “Big” moved the concept towards long-distance adventure riding.

Specifications and names differ by year and market. Common suffixes include S or SE for street-equipped dual-sport versions, R for more off-road-focused models, and Dakar, Djebel or Big designations on selected larger variants. Electric starting gradually replaced kick-start arrangements on many versions.

Within Suzuki’s range, DR motorcycles have generally occupied the practical, less competition-focused side of the off-road market. They are known for straightforward engineering, durable single-cylinder powertrains, useful low-speed control and the ability to handle commuting, trail riding and light touring. The related DR-Z line later developed the same broad dual-purpose idea with more modern designs.
