About Subaru XT
The Subaru XT is a two-door 2+2 sports coupe produced from 1985 to 1991. Developed when Subaru was best known for practical four-wheel-drive vehicles, it gave the brand a distinctive, technology-focused flagship. The same car was marketed as the Alcyone in Japan and the Vortex in Australia and New Zealand. It was later succeeded by the larger Subaru SVX.
The XT had one generation, with a notable update late in its production run. Early versions used Subaru’s 1.8-litre flat-four engine in naturally aspirated or turbocharged form, depending on the market. Front-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive configurations were offered. The later XT6 added a 2.7-litre flat-six and, in some specifications, full-time four-wheel drive, making it the more powerful and refined variation.
The model is especially known for its sharp wedge profile, retractable headlights and aerodynamic body. Its cabin reinforced the futuristic theme with features such as a digital instrument display on some versions and controls grouped around the driver. These details set the XT apart from Subaru’s mainstream cars, while its boxer engines and available four-wheel drive maintained a clear link to the brand’s engineering identity. It remains one of Subaru’s most unconventional production models.
