About Subaru WRX
The Subaru WRX is a compact performance car developed from the Impreza and shaped by Subaru’s involvement in rallying. First introduced in Japan as the Impreza WRX in 1992, it combined a turbocharged horizontally opposed “boxer” engine, all-wheel drive and practical passenger-car packaging. The WRX name refers to “World Rally Experimental.”
Five generations have followed. The first three were closely tied to the Impreza and appeared in several body styles, including saloon, estate and hatchback forms, depending on generation and market. The fourth generation, launched in 2014, established the WRX as a separate model line. The fifth generation arrived in 2021 for the 2022 model year, using the Subaru Global Platform and a larger turbocharged boxer engine.
Major variations have included manual and automatic transmissions, limited editions and the more focused WRX STI, which served as the flagship version through the fourth generation. Some markets have also offered a Sportswagon, while current performance-oriented derivatives include the tS.
Within Subaru’s range, the WRX sits above mainstream passenger models as a performance-focused, all-weather sports car. It is known for strong traction, distinctive engine character, responsive handling and the everyday practicality of a four-door cabin and usable luggage space.
