About Subaru Vivio
The Subaru Vivio is a kei car introduced in Japan in 1992 and produced until 1998. It replaced the Rex as Subaru’s main small passenger car and was followed by the Pleo. Developed for Japan’s 660 cc kei class, it combined compact dimensions and low running costs with a greater emphasis on driving stability and perceived quality than a basic economy car.
Built in a single generation, the Vivio was offered mainly as a three- or five-door hatchback, with passenger and commercial configurations. The unusual two-door T-top added removable roof panels, while the Bistro introduced distinctive retro-inspired styling. Most versions used a 658 cc four-cylinder petrol engine, with naturally aspirated and supercharged options. Depending on specification, buyers could choose front-wheel drive or four-wheel drive, manual transmission, automatic transmission or Subaru’s ECVT.
The performance-focused RX-R is the best-known sporting version, pairing a supercharged twin-cam engine with the Vivio’s light body. The model also gained attention through rally competition. Within Subaru’s range, the Vivio provided an urban alternative to the brand’s larger cars while retaining its interest in four-wheel drive and unconventional engineering. Its broad mix of practical, sporty and character-led variants remains its defining quality.
